Semaglutide
A GLP-1 receptor agonist studied for weight and blood-sugar management.
Overview
Semaglutide is a synthetic analogue of the human hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). It is one of the most well-known peptides of the modern era, FDA-approved (as Ozempic and Wegovy) for type 2 diabetes and chronic weight management. It reduces appetite, slows gastric emptying, and enhances insulin secretion.

How it works
Semaglutide activates GLP-1 receptors in the brain and pancreas. This increases glucose-dependent insulin release, suppresses glucagon secretion, slows gastric emptying, and signals satiety to the brain, leading to reduced food intake and improved glycemic control.
Common research uses
- Chronic weight management
- Type 2 diabetes glucose control
- Cardiovascular risk reduction
- Appetite regulation research
Considerations
Approved prescription medication. Requires medical supervision; common side effects include nausea and gastrointestinal upset. Not for use without a prescription.
