Melanotan II
A melanocortin analogue researched for skin pigmentation and tanning.
Overview
Melanotan II (MT-2) is a synthetic analogue of the naturally occurring alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It activates melanocortin receptors, including MC1R to stimulate melanin production and produce a tan, and MC4R, which mediates its side effects and libido-related actions.
Dosing
Injection
- Starting dose
- 0.25 mg
- Common dose
- 0.5–1 mg
- Frequency
- Daily loading → 1–2× weekly
- Notes
- Titrate slowly; avoid UV exposure after dosing.
Reported research/reference doses for educational purposes only. Always verify against primary literature and applicable regulations. Not medical advice.
How it works
Activating the MC1R receptor on melanocytes triggers melanin synthesis and melanogenesis, darkening the skin even without UV exposure. Activation of other melanocortin receptors produces appetite suppression and sexual arousal effects.
Common research uses
- Skin tanning and pigmentation research
- Melanocortin receptor pharmacology
- Libido research (overlapping with PT-141)
- Photoprotection studies
Considerations
Not approved for tanning use. Can cause nausea, facial flushing, increased moles/freckles, and darkening of pre-existing lesions. Requires careful UV avoidance and medical supervision.
